Welcome to Rhode Island Health Information Exchange

The Rhode Island Health Information Exchange (HIE) helps your healthcare providers securely share important health information so you can receive better informed, more coordinated care.

When you visit different doctors, specialists, hospitals, or other healthcare organizations, your medical information may be stored in several different systems. The Rhode Island HIE helps connect that information, giving participating healthcare providers a more complete view of your health history.

By having access to important health information when it’s needed, your care team can:
  • Better understand your medical history
  • Make more informed treatment decisions
  • Coordinate care across healthcare settings
  • Reduce unnecessary or duplicate tests and procedures
  • Improve the safety and quality of your care

The Rhode Island HIE is designed to support your healthcare providers, not replace conversations with you. Your providers may still ask questions about your health history, medications, or recent care to ensure they have the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Your health information belongs to you. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring your information is shared securely and only as permitted by law. Below, you can learn more about how your information is used and the choices available to you regarding participation in the Rhode Island HIE.

Accounting of Disclosures

Your Right to Request Information About the Sharing of Your Data

You have the right to request an Accounting of Disclosures (AoD).

An AoD is a written report that provides information about certain times your health information was shared through Rhode Island HIE, as required by the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

This right is established under HIPAA and helps promote transparency regarding how protected health information is shared. Participating healthcare organizations and the HIE work together to support this process in accordance with applicable privacy regulations
